Benicia gives a scanner two entirely different kinds of subject within a few miles. East of downtown, the Arsenal district and the Benicia Industrial Park built on it combine surviving 19th-century stone and masonry structures with modern tilt-up warehouses, manufacturing plants, tank farms, rail spurs, and the deep-water terminals on the strait. West of that, the 1840s townsite holds compact historic lots and wood and masonry commercial buildings on grades stepping down to the water.
