3D Scanning in Rocklin, CA

We provide surveyor-led Trimble laser scanning across Rocklin and South Placer County, delivering registered point clouds, scan-to-CAD drawings, and construction verification tied to project survey control.

3D Scanning in Rocklin: Local Conditions

Rocklin is named for its rock. The Central Pacific gave the town its name in 1864 for the granite quarry at the end of its new track, and built a roundhouse there in 1867 before moving the facility to Roseville in 1908. According to the Rocklin Historical Society, Rocklin quarries shipped granite for the California State Capitol and San Francisco's Palace Hotel, and by 1895 at least 12 were operating. Local historians count 62 quarry pits opened and abandoned over the years. Many are now filled with water or debris, one lies under the westbound lanes of Interstate 80, and the largest 19th-century pit, near Granite Street and Rocklin Road, now sits under a building and a parking lot. The Big Gun Quarry near Pacific Street and Rocklin Road was the last to work and closed in 2005; it is now Quarry Park. Old cut faces, stone foundations, and sites built over filled ground are all places where a scan records surfaces that ordinary shots would only sample.

The modern city is much bigger than the quarry town. Rocklin incorporated in 1893 and counted 71,601 residents in 2020. Interstate 80 and Highway 65 meet here, and the Capitol Corridor stops at the Rocklin station. Education is a large part of the building stock: the main campus of Sierra College, whose district covers more than 3,200 square miles, William Jessup University, and the Rocklin Unified schools, with 13 elementary, two middle, and two high schools. Campus modernization means existing-conditions plans of buildings that have been added to for decades, scanned on breaks or after hours. Commercial and light industrial buildings along the freeways bring construction verification: anchor bolts and steel checked to 1/8 inch from the scan, with total station check shots near tolerance, and slab deviation and levelness maps before and after the pour.

Our office is in the El Dorado County foothills, and we schedule South Placer work together with jobs in Roseville and Auburn. Control is GNSS primary and Trimble S3 secondary, held to 0.01 US survey feet relative to project control; scans are Trimble X9, processed in Trimble Business Center. Deliverables are a registered, cleaned point cloud (E57, LAS, or RCP), scan-to-CAD plans, sections, elevations, 3D linework, coded points, and a report stating the control basis and accuracy achieved. See 3D laser scanning, scanning in Roseville, scanning in Auburn, and our Rocklin surveying page.

Our Process

1

Project Planning

We assess your site and requirements to plan optimal scan positions and deliverable specifications.

2

Field Scanning

Our technicians capture millions of precise 3D points using state-of-the-art laser scanners.

3

Data Processing

Scan data is registered, cleaned, and processed into unified point clouds.

4

Deliverable Creation

We produce both interactive 3D models for easy visualization and traditional 2D plan sets — so every stakeholder can understand the site, whether they read blueprints or not.

3D Scanning in Rocklin: FAQ

Yes. Rock faces are irregular, steep, and often unsafe to walk, which is exactly where a scanner helps. We set up on stable ground, capture the face from several positions, and tie everything to survey control, so the engineer gets a true surface with sections cut wherever needed. A later scan lands in the same coordinate system if anyone needs to compare the face over time.
Yes. We plan around the academic calendar, usually breaks, weekends, or evenings. The scanner is quiet and does not touch anything, and one mobilization can cover several buildings registered to one control network. The modernization team gets floor plans, sections, and elevations for every building that line up with each other and with the campus site survey.
Around each pour. Before it, to confirm forms, embeds, and anchor bolt layout against the design; after it, to record what was actually placed and map slab deviation and levelness. Bolts and steel are verified to 1/8 inch from the scan, with total station check shots on any bolt group near tolerance. Tighter verification is available on request, and the report states the accuracy we achieved.
