3D Scanning in Sacramento, CA

Contour Survey is a licensed California surveyor based in the Sacramento region, not a national scanning dispatch. We scan across Sacramento County on survey control and hand you a registered point cloud plus the 2D and 3D deliverables your team works from.

3D Scanning in Sacramento: Local Conditions

Sacramento work tends to start inside a building that is older, larger, or more altered than its drawings. The State Capitol campus is in the middle of a rebuild: the 1950s Capitol Annex on the east side of the historic Capitol was demolished in July 2023 to make way for a replacement building. Downtown state office buildings are being modernized too, including the Gregory Bateson Building on 9th Street, a 1981 building the State Historic Preservation Officer designated historically significant in 2016 before its full renovation. Hospital campuses are growing as well. UC Davis Health topped out the 14-story California Tower at 45th and X streets in February 2026, with completion planned for 2030. Each of these starts with measured existing conditions.

The historic core is harder. Old Sacramento has been a National Historic Landmark district since 1965, and nearly all of its buildings date from the 19th century. When the city raised its streets a level against flooding, many original storefronts and sidewalks were filled in, and tunnels still run under the district, so nothing there is where a simple drawing would put it. In Midtown, the Boulevard Park district alone holds about 300 early-1900s buildings on the National Register. Out across the region, warehouse and industrial work is concentrated at McClellan Park, the former Air Force base with more than 8 million square feet of hangars, warehouses, and industrial space plus an operating data center, and at Metro Air Park beside Sacramento International Airport. More industrial land sits in Rancho Cordova and Elk Grove. Along the rivers, the Corps and the Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency have been improving the Sacramento River East Levee and the American River levees.

We set primary GNSS control, carry secondary control with a Trimble S3 total station, and tie every Trimble X9 setup to that network. Processing happens in Trimble Business Center, in US survey feet, with control held to 0.01 US survey feet relative to project control. You get a registered, cleaned point cloud (E57, LAS, or RCP), scan-to-CAD plans, sections and elevations, 3D linework and coded points, and a report that states the control basis, units, and accuracy. For new steel, see construction verification. For finished buildings, see as-built surveys. We work across Sacramento, Roseville, Folsom, Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove, Davis, and the foothills. 3D Scanning in Sacramento: FAQ

Yes. Scanning never touches the building, so historic fabric is left alone, and it captures what old buildings actually are: walls out of plumb, floors that step and sag, and openings that changed when the streets were raised. Everything is tied to one control network, so plans, elevations, and sections of the interior, facade, and basement line up with each other and with the site.
Yes. We scan the bolt groups and steel against project control and check them to 1/8 inch, adding total station check shots on any bolt group close to tolerance. If the job needs tighter verification, ask for it. Either way the report states the accuracy we actually achieved, so the contractor and engineer know what the numbers can support before steel is set or a deviation gets fixed.
We are local. Contour Survey is based in the foothills east of Sacramento, and the California Professional Land Surveyor who signs the report is part of the same small team that runs the control and the scanner. A return visit for more coverage or a follow-up epoch is a short drive, not a new mobilization, and the cloud you receive is already registered to survey control.
