Martinez packs three distinct scanning markets into a small city. Downtown, the 19th-century commercial grid along the Carquinez shoreline holds brick and timber blocks that have been repartitioned for a century, plus the county-seat civic buildings and the Amtrak station area where the Capitol Corridor and San Joaquins lines run through town. Renovation, retrofit, and accessibility work on that stock begins with the same problem: no reliable drawings, and walls that are not plumb. Second, the hillside neighborhoods above downtown generate residential capture where the structure and the slope have to be recorded together.
