Benicia packs an unusual amount of survey history into a small city. Its downtown grid dates to the 1840s — Benicia briefly served as California's state capital in 1853–54 — and boundary work in the older blocks means reconciling some of the oldest plats in Northern California with more than 170 years of fences, additions, and street improvements.
