ADA Ramp Surveys in Rodeo, CA

Rodeo's accessible network is county infrastructure. Contra Costa County Public Works has carried curb ramp construction in unincorporated Rodeo through its countywide curb ramp projects, its Rodeo pedestrian enhancement work has added bulb outs, a median refuge, and flashing beacons at Parker Avenue and Sixth Street, and the San Pablo Avenue complete streets and Bay Trail gap closure work between California Street in Rodeo and Pomona Street in Crockett includes curb ramp construction. All of that lands on an 1890s downtown grid where the original walks were poured long before anyone specified a cross slope, and where a century of patches, tree roots, and driveway cuts has left the surface between the corners as much of a question as the corners themselves.

For public right-of-way ramps, the reference is the Caltrans standard plan detail the ramp was designed to, and the numbers that decide acceptance are narrow: running slope no steeper than 1:12, flared sides no steeper than 1:10, cross slope no steeper than 1:48, a landing at least 60 inches long, gutter counter slope within limits, and a detectable warning field placed as detailed. We survey each ramp as a measured surface on a control network, then compute those slopes as planes across the panel and report them in a per-ramp table keyed to a location plan. Doing that on formed ramps before the pour is the version of this work that saves money; doing it after gives the resident engineer a defensible record either way. Between corners, a continuous scan of the walk shows exactly which panels are out and where the roots or settlement did it.
