Lafayette is a hard place to hold an accessible route, and the reason is topography. Mt. Diablo Boulevard is the commercial spine, and the storefronts, offices, and restaurants along it sit at varying finish grades with the boulevard, so entrance ramps and thresholds do a lot of work in a short distance. Off the boulevard the land climbs immediately: Happy Valley, Reliez Valley, Burton Valley, and the streets around Lafayette BART all run at grade, and a sidewalk crossing a hill is where the 1:48 cross-slope limit gets broken quietly. City paving work has included reconstructing curb ramps along Mt. Diablo Boulevard at cross streets such as Paulson Court and Acalanes Road, and adding compliant ramps at intersections along St. Mary’s Road, which is the normal pattern statewide: resurfacing counts as an alteration under federal guidance, so ramps inside the work limits come with it.

That closeout is where measurement matters most. A ramp poured to a 7.5 percent design can finish at 8.6 percent once the contractor ties into an existing gutter that is itself out of tolerance, and nobody sees it with a smart level held in the middle of the run. We measure the whole ramp as a surface: the run, both flares, the landing, the gutter counter-slope, and the connecting sidewalk panels, all on one control network. Curb ramps in the public right of way in California follow the Caltrans Standard Plans A88A and A88B geometry along with Title 24 detectable warning requirements, so the exhibit we produce shows the measured slopes next to the geometry the plan called for.

For private property, we handle entrance ramps, landings that have to be at least 60 inches long, accessible stalls and access aisles held within 1:48 in every direction, and the path of travel from the stall to the door.
