ADA Ramp Surveys in El Sobrante, CA

El Sobrante's accessibility work concentrates on two county roads. Contra Costa County's Appian Way Complete Streets project runs from Allview Avenue to San Pablo Dam Road and is intended to provide continuous sidewalk and bike lanes with bulb outs and refuge islands while improving access consistent with the ADA, and a separate county project reconstructs sidewalk, curb and gutter, and driveway conforms along both sides of San Pablo Dam Road between Appian Way and Hillcrest Drive. Both corridors are strip commercial: shopping center entrances, gas stations, and older storefronts, one driveway apron after another interrupting the walk. Designers, contractors, and the property owners fronting that work all need the existing and finished surfaces measured rather than estimated.

Driveway aprons are the recurring problem on a corridor like this. A walk that is comfortably within the 1:48 cross-slope limit between driveways can pitch well past it where it wraps down into an apron, and the same is true where a walk crosses a sloping site entrance. Measuring that with a two-foot level gives you a number for two feet of concrete. We capture the whole frontage as a surface, using a scanner or total station on survey control, and compute cross slope continuously along the route so the exhibit shows where the walk actually leaves tolerance and by how much. The same dataset gives running slopes on ramps, landing lengths against the 60-inch minimum, curb ramp flare slopes, gutter counter slope, and detectable warning placement, all on a stated coordinate and elevation basis so a later survey compares directly.

We deliver annotated slope exhibits, a spot elevation plan, DWG or DXF drawings, and the registered point cloud when a design team wants to pull sections later.
