ADA Ramp Surveys in Orinda, CA

Orinda's pedestrian network is concentrated rather than continuous. Most of the city is winding hillside road with no sidewalk at all, so the accessible routes that matter run through Orinda Village and Theatre Square, around the BART station and the civic buildings between them, and across school, church, and club sites in the hills. The city's annual pavement rehabilitation program is the mechanism that rebuilds ramps: Orinda manages its streets with pavement management software and folds curb ramp and crosswalk work into the paving contracts, as it did with the ramps at Sleepy Hollow Lane and Lombardy Lane in a recent paving project. Verifying those ramps as built, and measuring the private routes at the commercial centers, is where a survey earns its place.

Where a walk fronts a street on grade, holding the 1:48 limit while the roadway falls is a designed condition, and the difference between 2.0 and 2.4 percent is invisible to the eye and decisive on paper. We capture the ramp, landing, walk, and adjacent parking as a measured surface on survey control, compute slopes across full panels, and report running slope against 1:12, flare slopes against 1:10, landings against the 60-inch minimum, and accessible stalls and aisles against the 1:48 limit in all directions. On a site with a sloping lot and a raised building entry, the same visit records thresholds, changes in level, and the route from the stall to the door, so the architect is working from one coordinated dataset instead of three sets of hand measurements.
