Crockett grew as the company town of the C&H Sugar refinery, its early-1900s homes stacked on steep terraced streets above the Carquinez Strait. Those terraces make it one of the more technically demanding survey settings in the county: small lots separated by retaining walls, stairways, and shared access, where a boundary question is usually also a wall question and a drainage question. Permits run through Contra Costa County, and hillside projects need accurate existing-conditions topography before design starts.
