Topographic Surveys in Napa, CA
We produce laser-scanned topographic surveys throughout Napa, Napa County, delivering contours, digital terrain models, and CAD base maps that carry hillside permits, riverfront projects, and winery site design from concept through approval.
Topographic Surveys in Napa: Local Conditions
Napa is two topographic problems inside one city. On the valley floor the ground barely moves, so a topographic survey here is a drainage document first: spot elevations carried to hundredths of a foot, curb and flowline grades, swale bottoms, and the rim and invert of every structure a civil engineer needs to route water across a nearly level site. Near the Napa River and Napa Creek it is also a flood document. Decades of work on the Napa River flood protection project, including the downtown bypass channel, have reshaped both the channels and the FEMA mapping of the parcels beside them, so elevations referenced to NAVD88 and a current flood-zone determination belong at the front of any project near the water rather than at the end of it.
The hills are the other half of the city. Browns Valley climbs west into oak and grassland, and east of the river Alta Heights and the slopes running out toward Coombsville do the same. On those parcels the governing numbers are average slope, height measured from existing grade, cut-and-fill quantities, and the geometry of retaining walls built decades ago without a survey. Our Trimble terrestrial laser scanner suits both settings. It records millions of survey-grade points in a single visit instead of a few hundred rod shots, works from stable setups on ground too steep to walk safely with a pole, and lets us filter vegetation out of the cloud to recover a true bare-earth surface under oak canopy, vineyard rows, and ivy-covered banks.
Deliverables are a stamped topographic map with 1-foot contours (tighter on request), spot elevations, a DTM surface, and a layered DWG/DXF base map matched to your architect or civil engineer's standards, with the registered point cloud available to the whole design team. Because the site already lives in the cloud, a dimension nobody anticipated is extracted in the office instead of on a return trip. Boundary research and survey filings run through the Napa County Surveyor and the Napa County Recorder, both in the city of Napa. See also our Napa 3D laser scanning and Napa ADU surveys.

Our Process
Scope & Research
We confirm the mapping limits, contour interval, and datum your project requires, and review record maps and benchmarks for the site.
Field Scanning
We capture the site with a Trimble terrestrial laser scanner plus GNSS/total-station control, recording millions of survey-grade points in a single visit — terrain, structures, walls, trees, and utility surface features.
Point Cloud Processing
Scans are registered onto project control, vegetation and noise are filtered, and a ground surface is extracted to build the digital terrain model.
Base Map Delivery
You receive a layered DWG/DXF topographic base map — contours, spot grades, features, and boundary if requested — with the point cloud available on request.
