Mare Island is the kind of place terrestrial laser scanning was made for. The West Coast's first naval shipyard is now one of the region's most significant adaptive-reuse districts — dry docks, machine shops, warehouses, and officers' quarters spanning more than a century of naval construction — and for much of that stock the original drawings are lost or incomplete. Developers and design teams taking on these buildings face enormous industrial volumes: machine shops with high bays, crane rails, heavy timber and steel roof trusses, and floor plates measured in acres. Hand-measuring a building like that is not merely slow; it is practically impossible to do completely. A single scan campaign documents an entire machine shop — every column line, crane rail elevation, truss bearing, and clerestory — in one mobilization, giving every discipline on an adaptive-reuse team the same true-geometry dataset. That matters when the design question is whether a mezzanine fits under the crane rails, whether the trusses can carry new mechanical loads, or how a residential conversion carves units out of a high-bay volume. The answers are in the point cloud, measurable without lifts or scaffolding, and the historic fabric that makes these buildings worth reusing is documented rather than disturbed.

Off the island, Vallejo's Victorian districts downtown and on St. Vincent's Hill present the classic old-house documentation problem — no drawings, irregular geometry, ornate facades — and we scan those at the same standard for remodel and rehabilitation work.
