Lodi was incorporated in December 1906 and had 66,348 residents at the 2020 census. Outside town, survey work is shaped by vineyards. The Lodi American Viticultural Area was recognized in February 1986 and split into seven sub-appellations in 2006, and many vineyards there are family farms worked across several generations. Boundary retracement on rural parcels often starts with older county maps and long, straight lines that fences and vine rows have drifted from. Ground along the Mokelumne River needs careful topography before anyone builds on it, and flat valley parcels make small elevation differences matter for drainage and finished floors.

In town, the downtown core around the 1907 Lodi Arch on Pine Street, a National Register site and California Historical Landmark, holds older commercial buildings that rarely have usable drawings. Lodi's industry runs to wineries and food processing, including Pacific Coast Producers, one of the city's largest employers.
