Bridge & Infrastructure Scanning in Oakland, CA

We provide survey-grade laser scanning of bridges, overcrossings, and heavy structures throughout Oakland, Alameda County, producing clearance surveys, structural as-builts, and control-tied baselines for retrofit, rehabilitation, and widening work.

Bridge & Infrastructure Scanning in Oakland: Local Conditions

Oakland carries more structure per mile than any other East Bay city. The MacArthur Maze, where I-80, I-580, and I-880 fold into each other at the west end, is a stack of ramps and connectors on separate substructures. I-880 runs the length of the flatlands as the replacement for the collapsed Cypress viaduct, and Caltrans rebuilt its 23rd Avenue and 29th Avenue overcrossings in 2018 to fix the nonstandard geometry there. I-980 cuts a trench through West Oakland under a run of city street overcrossings. Across the Lake Merritt channel the city owns the 7th Street, 10th Street, 12th Street, and Embarcadero crossings, several of them rebuilt in the last decade. Alameda County operates the Park Street, Miller-Sweeney, and High Street bascules over the estuary from the Oakland bank, BART runs on aerial guideway through East Oakland, and Union Pacific and BNSF overheads cross the truck routes into the Port.

Scanning suits that inventory because the alternative is people in traffic. From a control network observed with GNSS and total station, adjusted by least squares and checked independently on NAD83 State Plane and NAVD88, we register every scan position and hand the engineer real coordinates rather than a self-consistent model. From it come vertical and horizontal clearance surveys computed across the full lane width, structural as-builts of bents, columns, girders, bearings, joints, and abutments for seismic retrofit and load rating, deck and soffit surfaces for overlay and rehabilitation design, and pre-construction documentation of what a contractor found on arrival. Where scour, settlement, or bearing migration is the question, the first scan becomes the baseline and later epochs are differenced against it across whole surfaces instead of a scatter of prism points.

Deliverables are E57 or RCP point clouds, clearance envelopes and diagrams, DWG or DXF sections, elevations, and framing plans, surface models, and epoch comparison exhibits, with stamped products where a licensed deliverable is required. City-owned bridges moving through the federal Highway Bridge Program and Caltrans Local Assistance have documentation requirements we scope to. • Licensed surveyor responsible for control, datum, and certification

Our Process

1

Control & Access Plan

We design the control network, datum ties, scan positions, and traffic or rail access plan around the structure and its closure windows.

2

Control Survey

GNSS and total-station control is observed with redundancy and adjusted by least squares, producing published coordinates and error estimates.

3

Scanning

Trimble terrestrial laser scanning from the control, with targets and check shots, captures the structure at high density in short field windows.

4

Registration & Deliverables

Scans are registered to control, verified against checks, and processed into clearance reports, CAD, models, and comparison surfaces with an accuracy statement.

Bridge & Infrastructure Scanning in Oakland: FAQ

Often, yes. A great deal of an overcrossing is visible from the local street beneath it and from the shoulders, so we capture soffit, bent caps, columns, and abutments from outside the travelled way. Where the deck surface or a mainline clearance is required we work a scheduled night closure with the contractor or agency, and one window normally covers the structure because each setup takes minutes.
A measured envelope, not a single number. We build the soffit and the deck as surfaces from the point cloud, compute vertical clearance continuously across the full travelled width, and report the controlling low point with its station and offset. The same dataset gives horizontal clearance to columns, barriers, and bent caps, which is what governs an oversize route or a lane addition under an existing structure.
With repeat epochs on the same control. The first control-tied scan is the baseline; a later scan registered to the same network is differenced against it, so displacement shows as a pattern across the whole deck, wall, or bent rather than at a handful of monitored points. We set the interval with your engineer, and the network monuments are placed where they will still exist for the next visit.
