Truckee incorporated as a town on March 23, 1993, and had 16,729 residents at the 2020 census, but its lots are far older than its town government. The settlement began in 1863 as Gray's Station on the wagon road over the Sierra, and the Central Pacific named its station Truckee by August 1867, a year before the tracks arrived. Subdivisions created before 1993 were approved under Nevada County, so boundary research here usually starts in county records. Downtown, the Town's Historic Preservation Overlay District covers the old commercial core, and exterior work there that needs a permit goes through Historic Design Review. Old lot lines, buildings set close together, and structures such as the 1875 stone jail on Jibboom Street make accurate boundary and existing-conditions work the starting point for any project there.

Weather sets the field schedule. Truckee averages 206.6 inches of snow a year, the Town declares the whole town a snow area, and monuments and ground surfaces can stay buried for months, so boundary and topographic fieldwork is planned for snow-free conditions. Interiors can be scanned in any season.
